Description
Made with organically farmed Sagrantino, this big red opens with aromas of cassis, scorched earth and cedar. The dense, brawny and one-dimensional palate offers baked plum, mocha and toasted hazelnut alongside grainy tannins and the heat of evident alcohol. Red wine with great polyphenolic richness. Deep and intense purple-red, with a complex aroma of red fruits, morello cherry, currant and raspberry, and delicate notes of sweet tobacco and cocoa, and again medicinal herbs in the finish. The structure is dense, with rich but harmonious tannins, of great thickness; The fruit is supported by a fresh acidity, and the aftertaste, persistent, is of jam. It is enhanced with roast red meat, suckling pig, game, pheasant, salami, venison stew, spicy cheeses.
During the winemaking, fermentation is in steel with maceration on the skins for 28 days. Maturation in barrique for 12 months. Light filtration and 18-20 months in the bottle before being placed on the market.
Sagrantino is one of the oldest native Umbrian vines, with characteristics of great polyphenolic complexity: a wild horse that must be known and tamed with correct viticultural practice, so that it can speak, like the other Lungarotti wines, a harmonious and balanced language. Legend has it that Frederick II of Swabia on the way to Castel del Monte stopped to hunt in the area of Montefalco with his falcon, when the animal belonging to the rare and prized Saccr breed fell ill and was treated with a medicine based on the local wine which since then has been called Sagrantino, from the name of the emperor's falcon. The DOC in Montefalco was recognized in 1979 also thanks to the work of Giorgio Lungarotti.
